Friday 19 February  

Nepal Flag

 

Kagbeni (Nepal) 7.30 pm

The film captures breath-taking landscape and colors of famous tourist places like Kagbeni, Jomsom and Marhpa areas located at the foothills of the Himalayas of Nepal, and portrays Nepali culture in a stage set by a familiar English story, 'The Monkey's Paw' by W.W. Jacobs (1902).

Bangladesh

Shyamol Chhaya (Bangladesh) 2.30 pm

Running time: 110 minutes

The film revolves around the sufferings of the war-ravaged people of Bangladesh in 1971. Pitambar, his blind father and grandmother, Karim with his daughter-in-law Ratri, Fuli with her mother, Mowlana Munshi Muslem and his wife Begum, Gourango with his mother and wife are the passengers on board a boat. The boatmen are taking them to safety, far away from the fierce clutches of war. All the people on board are devastated by the horrors of war. As the story advances, different events unravel.

On a sight-seeing trip of India, U.K. based Manav Mehta meets Mansi, the daughter of a singer, Tarababu. He is attracted to her, and makes his attraction known. Her father approves of Manav, and they go to Bombay to meet his family. On their arrival, they are treated as second class citizens. Both decide to leave. Mansi decides to improve her career and meets with Vikrant Kapoor, who helps her get started. They see each other regularly, and soon decide to get married. In the meantime, Manav has not given up hope of marrying Mansi and relentlessly purses his dream, even on the day of her marriage to Vikrant.

Pakistan

The film follows the life of Jinnah, the founder of Pakistan, who created the Muslim nation in the wake of Great Britain's relinquishing control over India. It is told through flashbacks as his soul tries to find eternal rest.

The story begins as an ailing Jinnah (Christopher Lee) dies and finds himself in a heavenly place awaiting final judgment on his deeds. That could take some time, for the celestial bureaucrats in charge have misplaced Jinnah's file. With nothing but time on his hands, the guide must question him to fill in his story. His responses comprise the main story.

SAROJA (Sri Lanka) 7.30 pm

Running time: 110 minutes

 

For over three decades the Sri Lankan Security forces battled the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE), a terrorist group in Sri Lanka that was fighting for a separate homeland.

Sundaram, a Tamil who has been forced to join the LTTE escapes into the jungle with his seven year old daughter Saroja, during a battle with the security forces. He is injured and cannot walk. Saroja is found by Varuni, an eight year old Sinhalese girl on the other side of the jungle. Despite the language barrier, a strong bond develops between them and Varuni coaxes her father to bring Sundaram and Saroja home. Now the family has to struggle against the angry Sinhalese villagers and the security forces for their sympathetic human approach towards the Tamil family.

Sanjay Mehra a Scientist, devises a computer which is capable of contacting aliens. His happiness is cut short when other scientists refuse to believe his claims. Driving home with his pregnant wife, they have an  accident. Sanjay is killed and his wife survives, but their child's brain is damaged. Years later, their son Rohit Mehra has grown up but mentally remains a child. He and a friend find his father's computer and follow the instructions provided. That evening their town is paid a visit by an alien spaceship and one of the aliens is left behind. Rohit and Nisha find the alien and their lives slide into chaos.

Fazlu and his 10 year old son, Ratan sell ointments and herbal medicines in the village markets. One evening Fazlu returns home with a second-hand pair of trousers for his son Ratan. His wife finds some foreign currency notes in the pockets while she was washing them. They think that this money must be of great value, but they don’t know how to exchange them. They seek help from Fazlu’s childhood friend Siraj. Greed and high ambitions begin to emerge as one after another, their dormant desires show themselves changing their relationships.

Running time: 105 minutes

Sedris, a hunter in a remote village takes his son Tikira hunting to teach him the trade. Other villagers do not enter the forest as Sedris has scared them with false rumours about ghosts. The sudden appearance of a monk with a young disciple becomes a threat for Sediris. Various attempts by him to remove the monks fail.

Meanwhile a secret friendship develops between the two boys, challenging the adults. Inspired by the little monk, Tikira gradually learns to love animals instead of killing them.
