Out
of the Shower Choir

This has been one of the best things I've ever done!
I've made great friends and feel much happier
and healthier than before joining.
OOTS Altos needed to help answer the question “Why Sing?”
Tuggeranong Arts Centre is seeking the help of local altos to join the Out of the Shower, On with the Show Choir. This lively bunch of over 50 year old singers will be performing in the multi-choir extravaganza “Why Sing?” which takes place at the Street Theatre in September.
“We have a surfeit of sopranos and strong voices in the lower ranges,” explains community arts officer Eulea Kiraly, “but many of our altos are travelling interstate and overseas over the coming months. We’re looking for singers in the middle ranges to help us achieve a harmonious balance.”
The award winning Out of the Shower Choir has been a vital part of the program at the Arts Centre since 2004 and welcomes people with little or no musical experience. The only requirements are a love of singing and a willingness to ‘give it a go’.
Under the leadership of choir director Julie McElhone, the OOTS choir will be participating in the Shortis and Simpson Why Sing? project with Can Belto, the Cyrenes, the Canberra Gay and Lesbian Qwire and the Worldly Goods choirs. Using a hugely diverse repertoire, over 100 voices will ask the question why so many people in Canberra get excited about singing in choirs.
‘The OOTS choir is one of the many community arts education classes offered through the Centre’s Art Up program’ says Kiraly. Other workshops include digital storytelling, introduction to theatre production and many visual arts classes including watercolours class, pastels, silk creations, digital photography, and the Friday morning art and craft group.
The choir meets between 10.30am and 12.30pm on Tuesday mornings during school terms. Semester 2 starts on Tuesday 22 July, but new members can join at any time. Cost is $40 per term plus a gold coin donation for morning tea. To enrol, click here or drop into the Arts Centre between 9am and 5pm Tuesday through Friday.
If you’re interested in having the OOTS choir perform for your group or community event, please contact community arts officer Eulea Kiraly on 6293-1443.
