The New England Ensemble has re-formed for ‘A European Odyssey’ for Strings and Piano – a once-only concert on Sunday 25 November at the Tuggeranong Arts Centre. This will be the final concert in the Arts Centre’s sell out Sunday afternoon classical music series.
Hailed nationally and internationally as among Australia’s leading chamber musicians – and with forty-plus years across thirty-plus countries and four continents of concert-giving to their credit – the New England Ensemble re-joins to present a “European Odyssey” of music for strings and piano.
Highlights include Dvorak’s enchanting Piano Quartet in D major – a perfect foil for both the dramatic G minor Quartet of Mozart and Brahms’ hauntingly beautiful Andante in E major.
This acclaimed ensemble was established as Ensemble-in-Residence at the University of New England from 1975-1982. They were the first full time professional chamber ensemble to be formed outside a capital city in Australia and quickly achieved national and international recognition in Asia, Europe and America.
Andrew Lorenz (violin), Robert Harris (viola), Janis Laurs (cello) and Wendy Lorenz (piano) were ambassadors for the New England region and University of New England (UNE) and forged a very loyal and supportive concert audience wherever they performed.
It was the ensemble’s eight-year-long residency at the UNE from 1975-1982 that inspired the groups’ name and the kick-started their long list of international and national appearances. Their exhaustive list of performance credits includes: the opening of the Hong Kong Arts Centre, being the first Australian group to appear for Japanese network NHK, broadcasts for the BBC London, concerts in major venues in England, Switzerland and Italy, comprehensive tours for Gioventu Musicale and numerous festivals and conferences in America and Canada.
A vigorous and sensitive performance, and indeed a high standard of musicianship and a strongly projected commitment were sustained throughout the evening. Daily Telegraph, London
