CABARET WINTER WORKSHOP:

Devise, produce and perform your own cabaret show

14 – 28 August 2022

Culminating in a public performance

on Sunday 28 August 2022 @ Tuggeranong Arts Centre, Canberra

“Queenie van de Zandt has a knack of bringing together the best in the business and she’s done it again with Cabaret Winter Workshop. What an amazing opportunity to work with the leading lights of the cabaret scene to develop your own cabaret show.  I wish this had been around when I was starting out!”

David Campbell

WHAT IS THE CABARET WINTER WORKSHOP?

Tuggeranong Arts Centre and the leading lights of the Australian cabaret scene are banding together to help emerging cabaret artists find their voice.

This 2-week course will have 20 lucky participants writing, producing, and performing their own cabaret show at Tuggeranong Arts Centre in Canberra, as part of their 2022 Season.

Sponsored by the Tuggeranong Arts Centre, the 20 lucky participants will attend the 2-week course for free.

The Cabaret Winter Workshop has been created by one of Australia’s leading cabaret and musical theatre performers, (and former Canberran), Queenie van de Zandt and her company, The Australian Musical Theatre Academy (AMTA).

This ground-breaking course is designed to help artists attain the unique skills needed to devise, produce, and perform their own cabaret show.  Running over 2 inspiring weeks, 20 lucky participants will work intimately with Queenie along with the Who’s Who of the Australian cabaret scene.

Week 1 will be delivered in a hybrid format, with live workshops and online masterclasses with the leading lights of the Australian cabaret scene – performers, directors, writers, producers, festival curators, musical directors, and venue owners, who together with Queenie, will lead the participants in the process of creating their own individual cabaret shows.

In week 2, the participants will have a chance to showcase their work, putting into action all that’s been learnt in week 1, by writing, producing, and performing a group cabaret show. Performing alongside Queenie van de Zandt and the workshops musical director, participants will perform the show on the final night of the course at the Tuggeranong Arts Centre on Sunday 28 August 2022, with shows at 5PM & 8PM.

The program schedule can be downloaded here.

WHO CAN ATTEND?

The workshop will be by invitation only, with an audition & application process undertaken to find our 20 successful artist participants. The workshop is then specifically curated to fit the 20 artists who are chosen. Auditions & applications are open to artists from any live performance genre (singer, writer, circus performer, stand-up comedian, songwriter, beat poet, or a genre not yet created!), from Australia or overseas, and we encourage diverse artists to apply.

It doesn’t matter if you have an idea for a cabaret show and want help to develop it or you don’t have any ideas but would love to write and perform in a cabaret show or if you’ve been in lots of cabaret shows or never performed one – if you are one of the lucky 20 successful artists, the course will be curated to fit your needs.

WHO ARE THE TUTORS?

The Cabaret Winter Workshop is co-produced by the Australian Musical Theatre Academy (AMTA) and designed and curated by AMTA’s Founder & Artistic Director, Queenie van de Zandt. Renowned for their industry knowledge and leading the way in providing training in musical theatre audition technique and cabaret performance, AMTA & Queenie are gathering a stella line up of tutors to work with participants.

The course will be led by Queenie, with specialised masterclasses taught by the who’s who of the Australian cabaret scene through specialised online and live masterclasses. As tutors are confirmed they will be added to this page.

In the meantime, here are some of the former tutors who have worked with cabaret performers in AMTA’s cabaret workshops:

Ali McGregor Cabaret Artist | Opera Singer | Writer | Producer | Former Artistic Director of Adelaide Cabaret Festival

HOW TO AUDITION FOR THE COURSE?

Because diversity and accessibility are important to the Tuggeranong Arts Centre and AMTA, we encourage enrolments from performers anywhere in Australia or overseas – and will be seeking out and encouraging enrolments from artists in regional areas as well encouraging POC, LGBTIQ+ artists, body & age diverse artists, to enrol.

All auditions will be watched and assessed by the Core Tutor and Artistic Director of the Cabaret Winter Workshop – Queenie van de Zandt.

To audition you will need to fill out an online application, where you will be asked to upload a 2- 5 min performance of you doing what you do as a performer (I.e., singers sing a song (accompanied by a backing track or live music), comedians do some stand-up, circus performers perform your act etc or you may choose to do a combo of different things). The audition doesn’t have to be created specifically for this application – if you have footage of yourself doing something onstage in a previous performance – that’s fine too – as long as Queenie can get a good sense of your talents).

“I absolutely loved the CWW last year – it was so inspiring to be around such brilliant, hard-working tutors and wonderful like-minded students. Thanks to the guidance from many of the tutors on the course, I performed my solo show “Natural Habitat” last year at Sydney Fringe Festival and am about to perform it again as an official selection of Sydney Comedy Festival’s “Fresh! Comedy” Program. I couldn’t have done it without all the amazing support and knowledge I gained from CWW!!”

Bridie Connell, AMTA Cabaret Graduate.

Since graduating from AMTA’s Cabaret Winter Workshop, Bridie has gone on to become one of Australia’s hottest new comedians, starring in shows such as Whose Line Is It Anyway? (Foxtel’s/Network TEN), True Story with Hamish & Andy (Nine Network), Tonightly with Tom Ballard (ABC))
