Congratulations to Fresh Funk on another great performance.
Fresh Funk proudly presents its latest production, a modern urban dance remake of the classic movie “Dirty Dancing”.
Originally set in 1963, “Dirty Dancing” tells the story of young Frances “Baby” Houseman, a sweet daddy’s girl, who goes on holiday with her family to an upper class resort. Baby, who has grown up in privileged circumstances, is awakened to a whole new reality as she becomes infatuated with resort performer Johnny and the whole dance scene in which he and the other staff take part when their shifts end, away from the judgmental wealthy guests. Baby begins the story as the picture of naivety but comes out as a much more understanding, bold, and realistic young woman.
As one of the most well-known dance movies of all time, “Dirty Dancing” is a natural choice for Fresh Funk. “It’s an absolute classic”, says Caroline Wall, Artistic Director. “The dance scenes are some of the most iconic of all time”. The Fresh Funk dancers have recreated some of these scenes with direct reference to the movie and have worked them into an overall updated urban portrayal. “There’s a few golden oldies in the mix, and it has been really fun to play with these while also finding modern music to suit the story and themes”. The soundtrack includes music from Ed Sheeran, Ariana Grande, Bruno Mars and Justin Bieber, just to name a few.
Fresh Funk has definitely captured the raw energy that is so synonymous with the movie. “Our dancers have been working really hard and they always have so much fun on stage. It’s impossible not to feel drawn to them, the same way Baby is drawn to the dancers in the original”, Wall says. With nearly 300 young people taking to the stage, audiences are bound to be grooving in their seats.
