The paradox of discovery through fibre...
Official opening: Friday 11 May, 6pm. Opening remarks by Dr Sharon Peoples.
A group exhibition by untethered fibre artists inc.
Each artist explores the duality inherent within the state of being in transit through fibre. Individual artworks examine and respond to the relative significances of journey and destination; of place, memory, time and states of being. 40 Fibre Artworks, varying sizes and configuration. The essence, the core, of group exhibiting is human interaction – imparting a message and sharing a passion.
The projected concept of a fibre art exhibition sets itself apart from the traditional – with the unconventional intermixing and intermingling of ideas, through the connectivity of the theme inTransit; utilising different fibre mediums – including the use of stitch, fibre, fabric, print, found objects and surface design – yet also unified, in a visually dynamic exhibition.
untethered links to learning outcomes for students of Textiles and Design, Visual Design, Visual Art and TAS, by demonstrating a range of material and conceptual practices. The group has successfully adhered to a model in which individual art makers can respond to the same theme. Additionally, untethered artists document their process with research, photography, and journaling, and this process is shared in an accompanying AV presentation. The inclusion of artists’ statements for each work further opens up access to the works for students, helping to unlock and extend understanding of the works.
The artworks entice the audience to share in the responses which reflect on individual experience and interpretation of the exhibition title, inTransit.
To quote Maisy Stapleton, former CEO of M&G NSW (Museums & Galleries NSW), Opening Guest Speaker at a recent untethered exhibition: The exhibition ‘… shows the power and importance of textiles, that can endure for centuries and bring forth an emotional response and relate us to the history and traditions of a nation. I can only end up by saying what a wonderful array of fine textile works you are exhibiting… They show imagination, thoughtful consideration, a range of challenging techniques, clever uses of material and great beauty. Above all they give us an insight into their maker’s dreams, stories and ideas.’
inTransit is the most recent exhibition planned for 2018 by untethered fibre artists inc.
