Michael Bryl: Shane Warne and Liz Hurley 2022

Michael Bryl: Personal and Famous

When:

Saturday 23rd July to Saturday 13th August

Details:

Michael Bryl is a Canberra-based painter who says: “I like painting portraits for the challenge and enjoyment. In previous times, I have created ceramics and paintings of other subject matter. I enjoy capturing the essence of a person on the canvas, with colour and form essential elements. My works are created by reference to a photo on my phone (as opposed to a printed photo or still life). I sketch the elements on canvas from my phone, which is a big challenge for me; deciding on proportion and perspective as I go. I do all of this with my hand shaking. I then select colours to use, mixing some of my own, and paint the composition in stages – background, foreground, fabrics and faces.” Michael Bryl

Artist bio

Michael Bryl is a Tuggeranong-based painter who takes inspiration from people who are important to him from his close family to celebrities such as Shane Warne. He paints portraits because he enjoys the challenge of painting people. Michael says that he enjoys “capturing the essence of a person on the canvas, with colour and form essential elements.” He uses his phone to reference the photos and sketches the portrait directly from it and plays around with perspective and proportion as he draws.  Michael says that “I do all of this with my hand shaking. I then select colours to use, mixing some of my own, and paint the composition in stages – background, foreground, fabrics and faces.” Michael Bryl
