Taiwanese-Australian indie-folk musician Kim Yang writes songs that speak from her experiences as a partner, a daughter, a traveller and an insecure soul. Her ethereal blend of sounds balances delicately between vulnerability and power. In 2019 Kim went on tour for her debut EP Ocean of Mind after a sold-out launch, she then played at the National Folk Festival 2019, Enlighten Festival 2020, Good Folk 2021 alongside Fanny Lumsden and StiffGins. Kim supported ARIA & APRA-awarded artists Tori Forsyth, Josh Pyke and Ben Lee on their tour to Canberra. Kim released her sophomore EP Brave in September 2021, which is partially funded by artsACT. Brave EP is full of emotions and messages that need to be told in our modern world. It tells you that being vulnerable, courageous, loving, and different is human nature. After all, you’re not alone.

B. Coming is the moniker of Canberra based singer songwriter Ben Cumming. After a stint immersed in the colourful music scene of Montreal followed by a 2019 North American tour, 2020 saw Ben return to his hometown of Canberra and soon signed with local independent label Vacant Room Records. Ben’s songwriting draws inspiration from conflict, modernity, the beauty of the natural world and an interest in the human condition. July 2021 Ben released his Debut EP “Boats”, and is soon to release a live album called “Live at the Polo”.

GEORGE ZHAO – THURSDAY 14 OCTOBER

Join us online, via TAC’s Facebook page, this Thursday the 14th of October from 12:30pm-1:30pm for a lunchtime concert by George Zhao. George will be performing an experimental soundscape layered with accordion folk tunes from Russia and China. George Zhao is a musician who was born in China. He travelled to many places, before settling down and making Canberra his home.

He was honored to have performed at Musicacoustica-Beijing Festival and Shanghai International Electroacoustic Music Week in China. George has performed at universities in the UK and US and is currently obtaining his PhD in music remotely through Rhodes University in South Africa. Everything George has seen, heard, and grasped in his travels has influenced his music. He enjoys sounds in Australia, and makes sound-based music with sound materials collected in Canberra. This idea was inspired by Hildegard Westerkamp’s ‘Kits Beach Soundwalk’, who’s work encouraged audiences to notice beautiful sounds usually overlooked in the city. In today’s urban life, many beautiful sounds are ignored by us, because we are too busy to listen; also, because of the noise pollution (the loud things). A good thing about the lockdown is that we have a chance to listen to our city.

SOPHIE EDWARDS – THURSDAY 30 SEPTEMBER

Join us online, via TAC’s Facebook page, for a free lunchtime concert by Singer/Songwriter Sophie Edwards on Thursday 30 September from 12.30pm – 1.30pm.

Influenced by a myriad of genres and styles, from folk to jazz and pop, Sophie pairs acoustic-driven instruments with hard-hitting lyrics to create a repertoire of expressive, moody pop songs.
